Registered Sex Offenders

Most victims of sexual abuse or sexual assault know their perpetrator. Far fewer cases involve strangers unknown to the child or adult victim involved.

The Community Protection Act of 1990 mandated sex offender registration so that law enforcement knew where convicted sex offenders were living.

Citizen abuse of registration information - to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders - is illegal and such abuse could potentially end law enforcement's ability to do community notifications.
