In 2013, Snohomish Police created one of the first true Public Safety Academies to ever be held in Snohomish County. While police departments have long held Citizens' Academies which focus on law enforcement, the Snohomish Public Safety Academy is a combined effort between the Police Department and Fire District 4 with assistance from the Sheriff's Office and Snohomish County Search and Rescue.
Over 16 weeks 25 citizen-students learn about law enforcement, fire service and related public safety topics. They experience hands on demonstrations and take field trips to public safety facilities such as the District 4 training center, Snohomish County Search and Rescue, and the SNOPAC 911 dispatch center.
Goals for the academy are to raise citizen awareness and knowledge of various public safety disciplines to promote understanding of how to better work with public safety officials and organizations.
