Currently the City has two active road construction projects downtown, one on First Street between Union and Lincoln Avenue and a second along Lincoln Avenue between southern city limits and Second Street. The roads will remain open to vehicles and pedestrians throughout the project.
The First & Lincoln Utility project began the second week of July and is almost complete. The project includes installing new curb and gutter (mostly between Union Avenue and State Avenue) and also installing some storm drainage. We removed the American Sweetgum tree at the northwest corner of First and Union because the roots were lifting the road. This project is slated to be completed by the end of August. It is funded by City utilities.
The First Street and Lincoln Avenue Overlay project is also ongoing. It began in late July and involves constructing ADA wheelchair ramps and paving. The curb ramp work should be completed by the first week of September, with paving most likely sometime around mid-September. Striping the road is the final task. The end of September is the likely completion timeframe. This project is funded mostly from a state Transportation Improvement Board grant (approximately 70%) with the remaining balance funded by the local Transportation Benefit District funds.
