Following the certification of election results on Nov. 28, 2017, John Kartak has taken the oath of office and assumed the position of mayor. A ceremonial oath will also be administered at the Dec. 5 Council meeting.
Five Councilmembers will also take their oath of office that night: Jason Sanders, Tom Merrill, Linda Redmon, Larry Countryman, and Steve Dana. Lynn Schilaty and Karen Guzak are seated Councilmembers who will continue their service.
As a result of the voters’ approval of Proposition 2 in the 2016, Snohomish transitioned from a council-manager plan to a mayor-council plan of government effective upon the election of the new mayor. Under the new form of government, the mayor will serve as the chief executive to administer the city government on a day-to-day basis. The Council will continue to be responsible as the legislative branch of government and is responsible for adopting various policies, ordinances, resolutions, contracts and budgets. In brief, the Council’s role is to adopt policies for the city and it is the Mayor’s role to carry out those policies.
Mayor Kartak has appointed current Deputy City Manager and Public Works Director Steve Schuller as Interim City Administrator and transition process leader.
The Countywide voter turnout on Nov. 7 was approximately 33%, while the City of Snohomish voter turnout was over 52%. Regardless of who you voted for, thank you for your active participation in the democratic process.
“My priority is to make sure every voice in the community is heard. I do not expect citizens to agree on every issue, but I do want each person to know that their opinion was valued,” said Mayor John Kartak.
At the Dec. 5 meeting, the City will also thank four outgoing Councilmembers for their many years of service to their City and neighbors: Dean Randall, 1996-1999 and 2006- 2017; Tom Hamilton 2010–2017; Derrick Burke 2010-2017; and Michael Rohrscheib 2014-2017.
