Potential Dirty Water in Area of Park and 22nd Street

dirty Water

Due to a house fire early this morning, some residents may experience brown or cloudy water.

This happens when naturally occurring sediment that settles on the bottom of water distribution pipe is disturbed or when excessive air is introduced to the system.

The sediments that cause brown or “dirty” water mostly include iron and manganese. Iron sediment results from corrosion of iron pipes and valves used in the distribution system. Other iron sediments result from the change of dissolved iron, which occurs naturally in our water, into sediment form. Dissolved manganese also occurs naturally in our water and it can be changed into sediments as with iron. Although Iron and manganese do not pose health concerns, they can negatively affect the normal aesthetic of our water.

The appearance of cloudy or “murky” water is caused by the introduction of air that breaks into tiny air bubbles. If you are concerned whether cloudy water is caused by air or something else, draw a glass of water and watch to see if it clears from the bottom to the top. If it does, then the color is scaused by air.

Running the cold water will clear up any brown or cloudy water, generally 10-15 minutes is sufficient. If brown water has made it throughout the plumbing in the home, you may want to run an empty cycle in the clothes washer to prevent the possibility of deposits or staining.
